St Mark’s Square, Clock Tower and Doge’s Palace

Described by Napoleon as “The most beautiful drawing room in Europe”, the square is home to the most significant, iconic buildings in the city. St Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace, Museo Correr, Campanile and the Clock Tower all surround the square.
The splendour of the Basilica will immediately catch your eye, with the marble arches and golden frescoes that decorate its façade. The interior is just as striking and you can enjoy a view over the square from the terrace. But if you prefer a view over the whole lagoon, we recommend you go to the top of the Basilica’s Campanile.

You must visit the Clock Tower on the northern side of the square, both to admire the perfectly working, blue- and gold-lacquered clock face and to see the bronze Moorish statues. As the clock strikes the hour, you can see the statues move to hit their hammers on the tower’s bells, reminding you that time is passing.

Remember to spend some of your visit at the Doge’s Palace wit its richly frescoed interior. You can also walk across the famous Bridge of Sighs, the ancient route taken by prisoners to reach their cells where they were imprisoned.

Rialto Bridge

This is the oldest of the four bridges that cross the Grand Canal, serving to connect the San Marco district where you’ll find the most well-known of Venice’s sights, and the district of San Paolo, where you’ll find the Rialto Market every day between 9 am and 12 noon.
Stroll past the fragrant crates of fruit, haggle on prices like a real Venetian merchant and treat yourself to a refreshing snack of seasonal produce as you explore the lagoon.
